When we set up Campervan hire with Coolcampervans in 2004 we wanted to give people a chance to enjoy the V.W Campervan experience. Our passion and love for VW’s is 2nd to none and we really do ‘live the VW dream’. We had a 3rd generation VW mechanic on-board so we had reliability no problems there, the problem was that we had to send our campers out to other companies to be refurbished inside and out ready to give people their VW holiday experience.
We got let down so many times with false promises of quality and timings and we always just took it on the chin because that seemed to be the norm. In 2008 we met a fellow VW enthusiast who showed us the restoration that he had just finished on his own 1967 Splitt Screen and we were impressed …….. VERY IMPRESSED!
The fact that Kev had done the complete restoration in his spare time and in a garage at his house amazed me and then to see the quality of his work filled me qith inspiration and also gave me an idea!!!
I had always wanted a VW Split Screen Samba and had sourced one in Japan so I asked Kev if he would restore my new pride and joy in his spare time to which I am happy to say he agreed. I told him the colour of the bus I wanted it painted in and that I wanted a bespoke interior of my design (on a piece of paper in a pub) which would keep the tradition but give me some mod cons.
So that was it, I did not see my Samba for 3 months. I then had a phone call from the TV show ‘Grand Designs Live’ who asked if they could film the moment that Kev handed me the keys. We all agreed to it and went to London for the big reveal.
As you can imagine I was absolutely over the moon and apparently the look of happiness on my face made it good T.V!
It gets better……. The 1st show I took my Samba to I won ‘best in show’ and ‘best air cooled’.
My Samba was then chosen by VW to represent the Split Screen in a display of the 5 generations of VW Campervans at the biggest VW show of the year ‘Vanfest’.
I then did a favour for a lady who really wanted my Samba for her wedding car and word of mouth got around and before I knew it my Samba got busy being wedding car and a centre piece for corporate events.
I knew that we were onto something with this talented man called Kev so I decided to offer him a job doing what he does best. We expanded the business to include VW restoration and VW interiors. We bought a furniture factory 20 minutes from our depot put a big door on it (so we could get the VW’s in) and our dream became reality.
Locally it was called ‘The Factory’ so we just added the 2 magic initials VW to it to give it the name ‘The VW Factory’.
The restoration side of the business took off immediately because of the quality of our work and our ‘not rip you off’ promise.
We then made our 1st repro Devon interior which proved to be so popular along with our bespoke interiors we employed a furniture maker called ‘Kev’ (yes another Kev and 2 Kevs’ in one building can be very confusing).
We then had to take on Ady and Sam to assist the 2 Kevs in doing what they do so well…… putting pride back into your VW!
It is not just Split Screens anymore we now also restore Bay Windows, Type 25’s and T4’s and can supply you with a bespoke interior or a Devon repro. Our restoration work now also extends to Karmman Ghia’s, Karmann Beetle’s, Sqaureback’s and Beetles, in fact any VW that you want to throw at us!!
If you have a VW and you are thinking of doing something with it please speak to us 1st. We may not be the cheapest but we guarantee that in a year’s time your pride and joy will look as good as it did the day you picked it up from us.
At ‘The VW Factory’ we do it all, but the difference between us and the other companies is the pride we take on each and every vehicle that comes to our factory because if you are reading this remember we were where you are now and there is nothing worst than disappointment.

We are now the main supplier of VW Campervans to Simon and Sarah @ Devon Cool Campers. They loved our VW Samba so much and wanted it so we offered them the next best thing a 1966 VW Split Screen Deluxe. We fully restored this bus and they have named her 'Lola' and she is now available for holidays and wedding hire in Devon. These pictures show you the work we did to make her the stunning bus she now is, from an ugly duckling to a stunning swan and everybody just loves her. We are currently fully restoring a 4 berth 1975 Bay Window 'Westfalia' for Devon Cool Campers that will be available for hire at the end of June.
At present we are also fully restoring a 1976 VW Panel Van which has a rare automatic gearbox and will be fitted with a full campervan interior, with leather throughout. It is going to be another stunning VW creation from the 'V.W Factory'.
More information and pictures will follow as time goes by............ Watch this space!
